Agriculture Advocacy, Projects, & Consulting

Summary

Sharing the beauty of the family farm is a passion of mine. Only 2% of Canadians are involved in primary agriculture production. We once grew up on farms, and then we had grandpa and grandpa or cousins on the farm to visit, and now as generations pass by, we no longer have any connection to the farm. I want to be that connection for people.

We are privileged to be 1 of 68 broiler chicken farms in Saskatchewan and 1 of ~2800 in Canada. We own and operate this farm alongside family. Over 90% of Canadian chicken farms are family owned and operated just like ours. Supply management means that not just anyone can produce chicken. You need to own quota for the right to produce and follow industry rules and regulations. This system allows us to set the bar high for for our farmers when it comes to animal welfare, sustainability, and on farm food safety.

Projects

Technology and the move to video conferencing has been able to revolutionize the art of agriculture advocacy. I offer live virtual farm tours that are interactive, engaging, and informative. When we consider biosecurity and the nature of our broiler barns, virtual tours give consumers an opportunity to see our chicken barns first hand when otherwise we may not be able to welcome those into our barns. In addition to live virtual tours, I also offer powerpoint presentations either virtually or in person. I have also sat on various expert panels. Past presentations include audiences such as Dieticians of Canada, culinary classrooms, Federal Municipalities of Canada, Sk Ministry of Agriculture, parliamentary interns in Ottawa, as well as over 100 classrooms in Saskatchewan. I work closely with organizations such as Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan, Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan, as well as Chicken Farmers of Canada.

For a daily dose of life on the farm, I manage an Instagram account called @fairskyfarms.sheep. I truly enjoy engaging with others and meeting new people. I share regularly on our chick placements in the barn as well as the latest happenings with the sheep.
